PARTICIPANT VALUE
The New Lexicon offers music journalists and related practitioners a sustained framework in which to deepen the intellectual and practical dimensions of their work. Over several months, participants can move beyond the compressed exchange of a commission, deadline, or single workshop and develop questions through presentation, response, revision, and public articulation.
The programme enables participants to:
– clarify the concepts, values, and commitments implicit in journalistic and editorial decisions;
– advance articles, essays, broadcasts, podcasts, editorial projects, and research through substantive feedback;
– develop more precise vocabularies for describing music, establishing claims, and communicating judgement;
– test journalistic and theoretical propositions within an international research community;
– encounter methods, musical cultures, media forms, and conceptual traditions beyond their usual references;
– situate their practices within historical, philosophical, technological, institutional, economic, and political debates;
– examine authority, representation, evidence, access, and public responsibility with greater precision;
– establish relationships and formulate new trajectories for journalistic, editorial, and research development.
This contextualisation does not displace the craft or urgency of journalistic work. It enables practitioners to understand how their decisions participate in, resist, or transform surrounding conditions.
The residency may generate new commissions, questions, formats, collaborations, lectures, publications, and professional relationships. It may support work circulating across journalistic, academic, artistic, curatorial, and public contexts without requiring those contexts to become identical. Its value lies not in delivering one model of excellence, but in enabling stronger questions, more deliberate decisions, and more precise communication of a practice’s significance and consequences.
